On Monday we got to celebrate this girl's birthday. She was sooo excited.
When she fell asleep on Sunday night I hung streamers from her bedroom door and went off to bed. At 2am I felt someone poking my arm and I opened my eyes to see a dark shadow standing perfectly still right by my bedside. Creepy! It was Anna and she had had a nightmare. As we walked back to her bedroom she said, "And the worst part is the surprise is ruined!" Oh the trauma.
I sent her to school with a basket full of pumpkin muffins to share with the class - her request - and she was as happy as could be.
And then I raced home so I could get to work! The plan was to redecorate Anna's bedroom as a birthday surprise. We swapped out her twin bed with a queen bed (we want her room to double as a guest room) and I hung pictures all over the walls. I had a large collection of frames, knick knacks, and photos that I had been gathering for some time. One of those "someday" projects that just kept getting away from me. I decided that her birthday would be the perfect opportunity to put it together at once and present it to her as a surprise.
Here is her reaction:
Needless to say, she LOVES her room.
And now when she has a nightmare there will be plenty of room for me to cuddle up in her bed. No more hanging off the edge of the twin!
(I'm planning to share more detailed photos of the whole room once I complete a few more things.)
We gave her a set of scriptures with her name on it and she was thrilled.

For dinner she requested pork chops, potatoes, black beans, and cantaloupe.
For dessert she wanted red velvet cupcakes. And I'm pretty sure that every wish in this 9 year old heart came true today. Happy Birthday!
