Thanks to this catchy song Anna quickly decided that she wanted to be a fox for Halloween this year.
And thanks to inspiration from Pinterest (see here) I was able to knock out this costume in one day.
It was really easy. And super cheap. Like, $3.00 cheap. Thanks to 50% off felt at Jo-Ann's, and other supplies that I already had on-hand.
So I thought I would quickly write up a tutorial post (mostly photos, few words) just in case anyone else wants to get their fox on this Halloween.
Supplies
- 1.5 yds orange felt
- .5 yds white felt
- 1/2" elastic
- polyester fiberfill
I used a one of Anna's dresses to help me trace out the general shape of the costume. Cut out two layers of felt.
Cut a slight v-neck in the front piece.
Sew front and back pieces together at the sides and the top of arm straps.
Pin a piece of white felt to the front. Sketch out some good chest fur.
Cut and pin.
Sew around all edges.
Cut a 6-10" slit down the back of the costume (to facilitate getting it on and off). Sew a piece of orange ribbon to each corner to use as a tie closure.
Cut out 2 orange tail pieces and 2 white furry pieces.
Sew white furry pieces to tail first
Then sew tail pieces together, right sides facing out. (I think leaving the raw edges out looks just fine.) Go along and trim your raw edges so they are smooth.
Stuff with poly-fill leaving the top 2 inches empty.
Fold the top over and stitch across, leaving a nice pocket for the elastic to run through.
Thread your elastic through the hole (if needed, use a safety pin to feed it through), and then sew the ends of elastic together.
Make a pair of cute ears. Thread a headband through 'em.
And that's it! Anna has now worn her costume twice and it's been a hit. Today I took her to Glee (in costume) and as soon as we walked in the door another girl gasped and with wide eyes asked, "Are you the fox?!"
